Fall 2020 Re-Opening

Reopening Plan 2020-2021

Statement on our
Fall 2020 Re-Opening Plan

(Revised on August 5, 2020)

The Fall 2020 Re-Opening Plan presented here was prepared to satisfy the requirements from the New York State Department of Health (DOH) and New York State Education Department (NYSED) using guidance from the Center for Disease Control (CDC), DOH, NYSED, and the Buffalo Diocese.  The plan gives our school community a framework on what to expect for the 2020-21 Academic Year and the health and safety measures that will be implemented to provide a safe school environment during the COVID-19 Pandemic.  Public and private schools were directed to prepare for three (3) scenarios for learning:  in-person instruction; distance learning/remote instruction; and a hybrid model.  STARS with our relatively low student density and a school building layout has allowed us to have confidence to safely offer five (5) full days of in-person instruction for all students at this time.  Although we propose we can implement this scenario of learning beginning in September, a ruling is needed from the Governor to allow for full time in-person instruction.  Governor Cuomo is expected to announce a determination on or around August 7, 2020.

We recommend that families with students currently enrolled at STARS and those interested in enrolling review the Re-Opening Plan and the Re-Opening Plan Summary.  As a Catholic school, we are committed more than ever to cultivating a culture of community, respect, and caring for one another. The Re-Opening Plan was formulated with this in mind and isn’t solely about meeting the requirements of the state.  The first version of this plan is where the STARS community begins preparing for the new school year.  We expect it to change as we receive more feedback from all stakeholders. STARS Administration asks that if you have concerns, questions, suggestions, or grievances regarding what is proposed in the Re-Opening Plan to contact Mrs. Webster (mwebster@staloysiusregional.com) immediately.  This is an evolving situation and subject to change and our Re-Opening Plan is adaptive.  This means that we will absolutely make changes to improve operations, increase effectiveness, and to fit current conditions.  When changes are made to the plan, the updated plan will be posted to this page and emailed to registered families.

Note that high risk students or students residing with vulnerable individuals may be provided alternative learning options as an accommodation through an approved 504 Plan.  Please contact Mrs. Webster for further information if you feel your family will qualify.

The Re-Opening Committee is still hard at work developing specific procedures for many everyday routine functions and identifying technology and equipment needs. Examples of procedures still under development are student drop-off and pick-up.  Families can expect another Re-Opening Survey to be emailed to collect further information to guide our further planning and preparations.  Families, please be on the lookout for many communications coming in the following days and expect many communications now throughout the year.  Communications will come via email, through our smartphone app, and/or the Wednesday Communication (now only being offered electronically).
