STARS is a regional school and is owned by the Diocese of Buffalo who sets the management structure, some policies and curriculum standards. The Bishop of the Diocese appoints a Canonical Administrator to oversee school operations and be the Spiritual Leader of the school. The Canonical Administrator is also President of the Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees is unique to regional schools and is regarded as the governing body of the school. The Board of Trustees sets the operating policies, oversees the school’s operation and finances and authorizes the school’s activities including Family Association functions.
Each member of the Board of Trustees applies to be on the Board and is appointed by the Diocese of Buffalo. Board members are appointed to three year terms.
Fr. Pat Melfi was born and raised in the Olean area. He attended Saint Bonaventure Parish Parochial School and Saint Mary of the Angels Parochial School. After high school, he enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy. Fr. Melfi obtained degrees in Mathematics and Civil Engineering. He worked as a design engineer for the New York State Department of Transportation. In 2001, Fr. Melfi entered Christ the King Seminary, in East Aurora and he was ordained to the Priesthood in May 2006. Fr. Melfi is currently the Pastor of Holy Name of Mary Church in Ellicottville and St. Philomena in Franklinville. He also is the Chaplain for the Olean Police and Fire Departments.
Mr. Stephen Schunk is a graduate of the University at Buffalo’s MBA program with a concentration in financial planning and control. As such he has completed courses in relevant topics such as finance, accounting, business law, personnel management and marketing.
For the last 25 years he has been active in the community, including being a retired Springville Griffith Board of Education Member and President of the Chamber of Commerce.
St. Aloysius Regional School is one of Mr. Schunk’s charitable endeavors. He is impressed with the high quality of education STARS offers to the families of our region. He currently heads up the school’s finance committee.
Angela Gardner grew up in Cattaraugus County and her and her husband returned to the region to raise their family. Angela’s children started their school careers in the Montessori Pre-K Program at STARS and believes wholeheartedly in the mission of STARS and is amazed at the impact the school has on changing the lives of students. She holds degrees from Morrisville State University and Cornell University. She has a 20-year career as a Wetland Scientist and Wildlife Biologist mainly working for consulting firms specializing in large energy infrastructure projects. Angela is currently an independent biological consultant and volunteers her time to support the STREAM programs and activities for the Jr High at STARS.
Mr. Shingler was born in Springville, and married his wife Becky at St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church. Their son is a St. Aloysius School Alumni. Mr. Shingler has been an active volunteer and supporter of STARS and oversees the IT systems of the school, has been the advisor of the Robotics Club and a lunch monitor. He has also been an active Boy Scout leader for over a decade.
Mrs. Kristine Edbauer is a graduate of St. Bonaventure University where she earned a bachelor’s in business administration with concentration in marketing and management as well as a minor in classical cultures. She completed further studies in computer sciences and project management and has worked for 25 year as an ITS project manager. She is a wife to Joe and a mother to Collin, Connor, Chandler, and Caleb. As a STARS alumnus she knew firsthand the value of a catholic education for the future. Wanting to provide their children the best academic education, with Christian virtues and values incorporated into the daily lessons for development of character and leadership, STARS was the ideal decision. The family was very active in the school during the 17-year span of enrollment, with Kristine chairing multiple events, acting as HSA Vice President, and coaching track. A lifelong member of St. Aloysius Parish she is a representative of the Buffalo Diocesan Tri-County Vicarate as well as a board member for Love INC. She is the proud mother of four eagle scouts from Troop 524 where she serves as a committee member, committee sectary and Chaplain advisor for the troop. She was awarded the Bronze Pelican by the Buffalo Diocesan Catholic Committee on Scouting for contributing directly to the spiritual nourishment of Catholic youth in the Scouting movement. She is active in support of veterans and in 2020 joined the local American Legion Post 431 as an Auxiliary Member. She is happy to be back working directly with the STARS families as a STARS board member.
Dawn Clabeaux moved to Springville in 2018 with her husband and son. Upon their move to the area, there was no question where her son would attend school. St Aloysius Regional School was the choice. Dawn also attended Catholic school through high school. A Catholic school structure that teaches good morals, ethics and well a rounded education is important to her family. Dawn has a master’s degree in Healthcare Administration and has worked in long-term health care facilities all of her career. She has been a licensed nursing home Administrator for 20 years. Dawn enjoys swimming, gardening and motorcycling. As Chairperson of the Board, Dawn is deeply dedicated to leading STARS into the future.
