Psalm 127:3 reads, “Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from Him.”
Children are indeed a reward from the Lord, and because of this, they must be nurtured in Christ and disciplined accordingly. Especially during their early years, you need to be consistent in the values you instill in them. More importantly, you must be steadfast in helping them understand God’s Word even in their young age.
To help you effectively lead your child to know God and live a faithful life, here are some essential Bible lessons for kids to start with.
1. Prayer Is Powerful (1 John 5:14)
It’s a good practice to train your child to pray even for the smallest things. As you introduce the concept of prayer, you can use this verse to help them understand how it can impact their lives. You can also share with them how prayers have the power to change anything as long as it is according to God’s will.
If you feel that they are having a hard time grasping the concept, you can share your personal experience with them. Recall a time when you have prayed for something and received an answer from Jesus.
2. They Can Be Closer to God Through His Word (James 4:8)
Unfortunately, we live in a world that is full of distractions. The prevalence of gadgets such as computers, tablets, and smartphones may be grabbing most of their time and attention.
As early as possible, help your child understand that it is better to grow closer to God rather than focus on these material things. Furthermore, teach them that the way to “draw near to God” is by reading the Bible.
To help them establish the habit of reading God’s Word every day, you can arrange a time where you will turn off all screens and read together. Doing so not only helps your child focus on God but also strengthens your bond.
3. The Greatest Commandment is Love (Matthew 22:36-40)
You may have introduced Jesus to your child as the Lord and Savior who died for their sins. With this story, it’s important to help them understand and remember that Jesus did this out of His love for us.
However, you must also teach them that since Jesus loves them, Jesus also wants them to love others. Share with them how a lot of people today don’t have the privilege of knowing Jesus as they do. These people may look fine on the outside, but they may be hurting or lacking something inside.
Ultimately, teach your child that they can share this love by respecting their teachers, genuinely caring for their friends, and eventually, introducing Jesus to them.
Your child is growing, meeting new people and facing new challenges every day. Considering this, you must ensure that they have a solid foundation in Christ and God’s Word. You can use the lessons mentioned above to train your child and strengthen their faith so that they can be ready for anything. This also enables them to be effective witnesses of His love to anyone and everyone they meet.
